I wanted to share this because it is something that I see often in writing when I visit Facebook, when people are texting with me and even in invitations to party. Grammar is very important to me. Being able to understand what you are actually saying/typing is very important. Mel Kharbach (2014) explains "It does seem like digitality is killing some important aspects of
language use and as such it behooves as teachers and educators to draw
our students attention to this growing mal-appropriation of language and
its negative effects on the grammaticality of their language." With the 21st century being all about the quickness of
typing and getting things out fast, grammar seems to have been lost. It
is our jobs as educators to make sure that our students understand the proper use of grammar and can choose the correct spelling when writing.
An example:
They're eating lunch right now!
There eating lunch right now!
One is just wrong. :)
My favorite infograpic from the article:

I agree 150% Grammar is very important!!! I have found an infographic quite similar to the one that you have shared and I share it repeatedly with my students. They don't seem to grasp the info or more likely they don't care and so it goes by the wayside. However, I keep getting after them about their language. Eventually (over the course of the year) students get the point and being correcting their mistakes.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with you. I think that grammar is a big part of the writing process that should be taught to our students. This is a hot topic in our district right now. We have been so focused on the workshop approach for writing workshop that the grammar instruction has been lost. This is a huge gap in our language arts that needs to have some attention. Our students need to know the proper use of grammar especially now days with all of the technology that is out there that allows students to use improper grammar.
ReplyDeleteI really like this post. I couldn't agree more and love that you provided the link to the infographic! I need this as a poster in my classroom!! I see Facebook posts all of the time where people type the wrong your/you're and that alone drives me crazy. I am completely guilty of using the wrong affective/effective and always have to check which one I'm using which is why I'm so impressed with the infographic you provided. Thanks for the post!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great post! I have seen a significant decrease in student ability to write/spell properly. Even though I teach science, I try to enforce good writing and spelling habits with the students. I know that there aren't too many people that care how to spell or write properly anymore, but I think it is important and will continue to push the issue.
ReplyDeleteI really liked the infographic that you provided as well!
